Connect the south of Gaza to the electricity from Egypt   

 

Of the support of His Excellency the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt and the President of the Palestinian National Authority, and with the sponsorship of His Excellency the Egyptian Minister of Energy and Electricity, Dr. Hassan Younis, and the acting chairman of the Palestinian Energy Authority Dr. Omar Katana, the final agreement between the Egyptian Canal Electricity Distribution Company and Gaza Electricity Distribution Corporation was signed to provide Rafah area, south of Gaza Strip with electricity from the Egyptian network through the implementation of the project of two phases, where the first phase provides Rafah with 5 MW and the second phase to provide Rafah with 12 MW, it was agreed to make efforts from the two sides to complete the project by the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan, Dr. Hassan Younis, Minister of Electricity and Energy said that this agreement is unprecedented in terms of the prices of construction, as well as tariff rates , the cost of investment for the project was reduced to half , in regard of tariff the Palestinian side will be inside the tariff for major segments that taking into consideration the very difficult Palestinian situation which is in need for support and assistance. Dr. Omar Katana stated that this agreement marks the beginning of cooperation between the two sides, as both sides looked forward to linking networks of the two counties with high-voltage lines after obtaining the approval of the seven linking counties, which will allow the exchange of large quantities of energy in order to meet the needs of the Gaza Strip for twenty years to come.On behalf of the Palestinian / Eng. Suleiman Abu Samhadana general manager of Gaza Electricity Distribution Corporation(GEDCo), and on behalf of the Egyptian side Eng. Ismail Al-Hilal board chairman of the Egyptian Canal Electricity Distribution Company had signed the agreement. September 2006
